Without someone to protect and care for a second gate elsewhere, I wouldn't want it replicated just yet. This technology is so new to the world, and I can count the amount of people I know who can read the runic language on one hand, let alone letting another city build their own. But my dream would be these, all across the world. Right now it's just trade ships, but it would be easy to see how this could be used to rescue people from natural disasters.

It does sound a lot like magic when you phrase it that way. Magic is invisible in most of it's states, but everpresent- like air. It only takes physical form when crystalized, or utilized by someone with a natural ability to use it, like a mage.
