They could he testing our mettle, or simply have a poor sense of humor. Either way, it isn't just you.
[ And there may be some comfort in that, not that any of them deserved to be subjected to such a bizarre excuse for a test. ]
Aren't banners usually congratulatory phrases? "Happy Birthday" and things of that nature.

Or is this a form of deflection?
