[ Adaine doesn't have much experience with beach parties. But the idea of relaxing on a sunny strip of sand felt like something she would want to try— especially if her other option is more forced interaction at the café.

So, here she is, sunglasses on, lounging on a towel underneath a large umbrella. ]

I'm sure we're all glad that that mission is over.

[ Or, maybe it's just her, and she's projecting. ]

I'm taking suggestions for your perfect beach snack. I've not spent much time on beaches, and I want to make sure I'm doing this right. What should I have with me, to make the experience perfect?

[ She'll sign off there, but people are free to comment and suggest snacks for her to try. Or, they're welcome to come find her and hang out on the beach in person as well! ]

The only thing I got out of that mission is that I am not cut out for teaching.

The best snack directly correlates to how many seagulls there are.

Nor am I cut out for learning at a [ air quotes ] "normal" school.

I think this is technically a river, rather than the ocean, but that's never stopped seagulls before, has it?

Normal schools are still better than boarding schools.

I’ve seen seagulls set up camp in a parking lot miles inland. They aren’t picky about anything. That’s the problem.

Alright, then. So give me your favorite "many seagulls" snack, and your favorite "not a seagull in sight" snack.

[ He hums, considering. ]

Many seagulls snack has to be bite-size. You don't have time to take multiple bites at it. I've seen seagulls take hot dogs right out of their buns. They don't play around. Something with a lid's good too. Like a can of nuts or chips, something to seal so the sand doesn't get in.

No seagull snack? Hot dogs from the cart parked by the beach, but I don't know if the bots have put one here. Beef jerky if not.

[ Adaine glances around the riverside beach that the companion bots have set up. ]

No hot dog carts in sight. I suppose I'll have to settle for a can of mixed nuts.

No hot dog carts? They've failed. Next you're going to tell me there's nobody with a giant cooler on wheels selling ice cream sandwiches.

[ They do seem to miss the mark sometimes with these recreations, don't they? Most of the time, Tim chalks it up to the emptiness of the locales, but it's the worn aspect that's missing. There should be more wobbly chairs and squeaky doors.

Nuts on the beach, though... that's a choice. ]

Why would anyone have nuts on a beach? They're only going to make you thirsty.

Port cities, giant cliffs over rocky seas, sure. But sandy, vacation-ready beaches? Not so much.

I guess it's a regional thing too. You don't really get vacation beaches where I'm from either.

They're good if you like lying around in the sun or... sand. I don't really. [That's definitely the only reason why she never liked the beach trips. She should probably contribute to Adaine's main question.] For snacks, I feel like hot dogs are a beach food?

I'm still not sure I see the appeal... But I thought I pick to say least give it a proper go. [ Just so she could cross it off the list, as it were. ]

Hot dogs feel like more of a stadium food, to me. Like something you would eat while watching a bloodrush game.

I guess. I think I have some memory of doing that at my sister's basketball games.

[Otherwise she wasn't really sitting with the regular crowd. On account of being from a family of famous heroes.

Leaving aside the question of what the fuck a Bloodrush is. These guys have a bizarre world, clearly.]

I think there's a lot of overlap, honestly.

[ Adaine nods. ]

They're both recreational environments, right? [ Which may sound like a far too sterile, academic description, but this is Adaine speaking. ] It would make sense that they would have snacks in common.

Make sure to load up on sunscreen! You don't want your first time at the beach to end with a sunburn.

Otherwise, you can never go wrong with potato chips.

[ Adaine reaches for something out of sight, and comes back with a bottle of sunblock. ]

I've got SPF 30! Picked some up at the QuikTrip on my way over.

Potato chips are always a good bet. Do you go for the ruffled ones, or regular?

Depends on whether or not you have dip! Ruffled ones are always better with dip.

Personally? I'm a 'sour cream and onion' girl, but to each their own. I kinda doubt they'd have ketchup chips here.

What! Like, I'm not a huge fan of overly sweet things but fruit in general is just a must during the summer.

[ Riz has never been to the beach proper either. Adaine probably knows that by now. The only beach-goer of the bunch is probably Fabian, on account of the whole childhood-at-sea thing. ]

I think... sandwiches.

[ Is he funny?? Adaine???? Is he funny??????? ]

[ None of them are standup comedians but even she knows that's low hanging fruit. ]

But I am cozy! It's nice out here. You know, as long as I stay in the shade. I don't think elves are meant to get too much sun exposure.

[ Screw not already being at the beach with Adaine!!! GORGUG IS ALREADY AT THE BEACH WITH ADAINE!!! In a very suitable short-sleeved hoodie and shorts. Look, it's like he took off half his usual dress for this! ]

Is there food that isn't okay on the beach?

[ The question....they didn't think about! ]

[ Adaine has her jean jacket off, neatly folded off in a corner of the town space, and a pair of sunglasses on, through which she is observing the beach goings-on. ]

Well, yeah. I mean, you wouldn't eat a full Moonar Yulenear dinner at the beach, would you?

[ She raises a hand to pull her shades down, so she can level a Knowing Glance at Gorgug over the frames. ]

Did I see you holding hands with a companion bot over there?

[ Wouldn't he, Adaine? Gorgug needs to consider this (and it's obvious he is--it's also obvious that he doesn't hate the idea of eating a full Moonar Yulenear dinner like, right now). But he doesn't actually get to the reasoning portion of that thought before he's hit by.

The Look. And what comes with it, too. ]

I-- [ He starts, instantly defensive, already a grimace drawn on his face. ] I wasn't holding hands, it-- Fabian already gave me shit over it.

[ And Gorgug doesn't think Adaine's about to give him shit about it, but he's just deflated over the interaction. Defeated. Moonar Yulenear dinners on the beach can't help this. ]

[ She grins impishly, and pushes the shades back into place. ]

I'm not giving you shit! I think it's cute.

[ There will be a problem if the bots turn out not to be trustworthy, but then again, maybe Gorgug having an "in" will help them in that eventuality. ]

What's their name? [ ... ] Do they have names? I haven't thought to ask.

[ He chews on the inner side of his bottom lip, and--he knows Adaine won't judge him if she says she won't. She's more likely to tease him, which is embarrassing, but Gorgug can handle it better than whatever Fabian's deal is.

So he nods, somewhat at ease. ] They do. Their name is Deem. We met in that empty city--they're one of the bots that focuses on building and repairs, [ Gorgug explains. ] I was telling them-- I was thinking I should get a lab space, so I can study better.

... And I was looking at their hands 'cause I said I wanted to build bots like them.

[ Since, you know--Adaine remarked on the hand holding, and it was definitely that, okay!! ]

I think a lab space would be a great idea! If you need help with spell components, I've stocked up on plenty. [ Although likely Gorgug's artificing wouldn't use the same sort of components that Adaine's spellcasting would. But you never know! ]

Thanks. I liked putting our spells together to make the drone invisible. Even if it didn't last. [ Dumb and stupid Moorecroft.

Still! ] It'd be fun to do that again. You really helped me with the magic side.

[ And barbarian, too. But Adaine's multitalented: she's been helping him with both!! ]

Do you want fish?!

[ Of course there's at least someone excited about being out on the beach. And that person is Fabian, having way more energy in his voice than he's had at practically any point during the last mission. ]

You absolutely have to have fish as part of your beach day! Do you want me to see if there are any in the river?

[ Adaine's eye roll may not be visible behind her sunglasses, but it's there all the same. ]

Fabian, are you seriously proposing that you [ she starts ticking things off on her fingers ] catch, descale, debone, and cook a fish, straight out of the river, whilst everyone else is trying to enjoy a relaxing beach day?

[ Despite that slight pause before he said it, like he had to think about it for a second, his answer sounds so natural. Like he isn't seeing anything weird at all about this, despite Adaine laying it out so clearly. ]

You don't think catching fish is fun, Adaine? Or-- well, even if you don't enjoy the activity, surely you must enjoy its results of delicious cooked fish!
