Hello, everyone! [ comes a chipper greeting. This is Rosie's first time addressing the collective of displaced individuals like herself, so... She wants to make a good impression!
As she talks though, her hands are busy working beneath the framed screen on something. It sounds like paper being folded, maybe, but she's able to look away from it to smile into the lens. ]
The end of the year usually means lots of holidays where I'm from, which got me thinking what other worlds might celebrate. I figured it might be fun to talk about and, like, compare notes in a way!
Specifically: What are your New Year's traditions? Mine always involved lots of special food and it's the only day of the year you'll catch me awake at sunrise, but- I'd like to know what other people do! [ She pauses briefly as something occurs to her- ] Even if your New Year isn't the first too! Some cultures on my world could also be using different calendars so their new year wasn't until later.
[ That seems to be it, maybe, as she pauses again. She promised (herself, mostly) she'd try to let people in a little more so... ]
I'm also, uh, not used to doing a New Year's celebration by myself anymore, so- If anyone wants to do anything together, like, you can just. Let me know!
[ Before she can embarrass herself any further, the blond reaches out to end the video hastily. ]

...Probably not the best way to spend the holiday.
Food sounds nicer.
no subject
people do that where I'm from, too!
actually that was my ex's preferred way to spend the holiday, I think
but he humored me doing other traditions too
I can definitely provide people the food!
Japanese food though
ever had soba?
no subject
You've been to Japan?
And won't it be kinda hard? Getting food from Japan in a place like this?
no subject
you're cute
I'm from Japan, actually!!
and I know how to make the important things, like New Year soba
and mochi!
no subject
And that all sounds pretty good.
Good way to kick off a party.
Think you'll need help with anything?
no subject
oh, huh,
actually, a new year's party would be fun...
I've never hosted one myself! usually just showed up to other people's
hm
I was going to make mochi ice cream too
and won't say no to a man good with his hands to help!!
no subject
Yeah, I'll stop by to help.
How hard can it be?
no subject
I appreciate it
mochi is honestly easier
but if you want a challenge I'm sure I can find something

You're Japanese, aren't you, Rosie-san? So you should know the same customs... though I suppose if we are from different places or times, things would be different.
We will usually try to do anything we can to usher in an auspicious new year. This means cleaning the house thoroughly, repaying debts and various ways of warding off evil spirits. We may also visit a shrine or temple at midnight. And of course, there's also good food and celebrating!
(OOC: /loots wikipedia for info)
wikipedia, tried and true... or yokai.com for me kglrhlga
[ She nods along as Rin mentions her traditions though. Yeah. Yeah, that sounds right. ]
What's your favorite new year's meal? Mine is always toshikoshisoba.

It's... Something about making sure you have good luck in the coming year? I think? It wasn't something i thought about much.

I moved a lot when younger but honestly one of the things I only did have then was some traditions from my home country
drinking happens with us too!
though the sauerkraut is different
I don't think I've ever had it?
no subject
Moving a lot makes it hard to keep anything, so I'm glad you managed something. Where do you call Home and what sort of traditions did you have?
no subject
I'll have to try it! I'm not a huge veggie fan in general, but some stuff is good
I was born and raised in Japan
and our traditions center a lot around food and the gods of the new year!
oh, and
the first dream of the new year is supposed to be, like, an omen of the year to come
so hopefully no nightmares!!

You needn't be alone! Would you like to spend some time with A-Xu and I? Ah, that would be Zhou Zishu. I am Wen Kexing.
no subject
that sounds great!
especially the food, honestly
I appreciate it!!
the more the merrier and also it won't mean, like,
just one person feels they have to keep me company or anything
so it's nice to meet you Wen Kexing!!
and I'm sure I'll like meeting your friends too

[Not so different from most days, in truth. But that just sounds depressing, so Hank scrambles for something else to add.]
Uh
Eggnog’s good shit too.
no subject
honestly, that's the way I usually do it too
just trying to seem a bit more put together here what with, uh, being responsible for saving our worlds and all
consider me curious: what do you spike your eggnog with?
Baileys is my go-to but sometimes makes it too rich even for me
no subject
[Hank has to squint at the text for a minute because finally, someone on Etraya who’s his kind of normal.]
I like the way you think. Too much bullshit for anyone to shoulder without some fucking booze
I’m not too picky though
Bourbon. Whisky. Usually I go for whatever will get me drunk the fastest, but with eggnog it’s like. Fuck. Actually wanna enjoy that
For a while. And then get drunk
no subject
you said it, man
I understand though
Some drinks you do want to enjoy!
other times you get a Long Island because it's five drinks in one and that's just being efficient
no subject
Haven’t had a long island in so damn long
[But would one here on Etraya even be good?
Yes, Hank decides. Worth trying.]
Should get a home bar here or something
Shit’s free. The fuck are they gonna do?? Delete my world because I drink too much?
[Maybe, Hank. Maybe.]
no subject
at least, in my humble opinion
there was a lady here that served beer at her place
that was nice but, yeah, a home bar would be sweet
in the meantime though I just get my fix where I'm able to
so if you need some recommendations, I'm your gal!!

It's fine, if not! Honestly, I imagine that's kind of cool then to learn about all the different ones.

... Where were you, if not on earth?
[ That implies that there were people on earth! At some point! And now she isn't? Entirely new worlds Rosie has heard of, but not earth-then-not-earth. ]
no subject
no subject
Oh, huh. I guess that's... kind of reassuring to know, almost? Even if only in some ways like stories, people remember.
Anyway! Well, you can always make your own New Year traditions too. Nothing stopping you!
no subject
I was just thinking that. What things have people said so far with how they celebrate?
no subject
Food is common too, but- Not a lot of, like, going to places I realize? We tend to go to a shrine and pull a fortune for good luck in the coming year.
no subject
Pulling a fortune for good luck? That sounds like a nice tradition though.
no subject
And it is! I think so. I mean, it sucks to pull a bad fortune but- Sometimes, the fun of that is seeing if you can't make it good even still.
no subject
I guess I'll have to figure out something for myself then.
