CHIRPER

⏵ CHIRPER ⏴
Welcome to our bi-monthly CHIRPER post!

There are a few ways characters can interact with this:
  • Characters receive a notification to please fill out the form, which is fully optional.
  • When forms are not filled out, they are filled out by the companion bots of Etraya! This means that while the character themself is not choosing to play with CHIRPER, their player still can.
  • Other characters can be prompted to fill out their friends' profiles for them.
  • Alternatively, they choose not to fill out the form, and it remains unfilled!

This is just a fun little way of expanding CR. For those who do post a top level, CHIRPER toplevels are worth five extra points regardless of if they are put up willingly by the character themselves. These five extra points do apply to the 25 maximum per month.

Once characters' profiles are up, other characters will be given the option of giving them a "like" or a "dislike" (using ✓ and ✕ symbols in the subject line of the comment) but they can also provide an answer as to why they gave that answer! Or just respond to the contents of their profile, +1ing the fact that if Barnabas were to get laid more often, maybe he would be less of a sourpuss.

Do you have a sparring partner? I'm lacking in one myself.

But it is something worth looking forward to. Though, do you write poetry? I can see you have of a lot of free-form material happening here.

If you believe yourself worthy of it, then I shall take your measure.

I do not. If aught, I practice oral tradition.

[Less evidence.]

I wouldn't call myself worthy, since I don't yet know how I measure up. Sparring is a good way to understand someone.

Ah, you're an oral type. Knew a few people like that.

In this we are in agreement.

Did you now? I find it a dying practice.

[To be fair, that's in part because his people who practiced it...are all dead.]

[See, practically friends already...]

Then it seems like it's worthwhile to see what each other has to offer at least once.

I'm gifted when it comes to knowing people with dying skills, I suppose.

[A far too generous estimation by Barnabas' measure...]

You have been to Stonhyrr. Should you wish to pursue this, that is where you will find me.

Yeah, just the once when Cid was showing me around. Do you have date and time restrictions or if I just show up, you'll be available?

I will be available.

Good. I'll be there in an hour.

Very well.

[So eager.

Though that will be all Barnabas sends to Vander, even should he reply further. When Vander shows up in an hour's pass, he will find Barnabas on the singular bridge to Stonhyrr. At its mid point, which is large and circular, like an arena because it very much is one.

He is dressed in his usual black and blue outfit: leather boots to his knees, blue high-collared shirt tied in the front nestled under the black doublet which is fastened closed by a leather strap. His sword belt hanging around his hips, decidedly without the object of its namesake. Black pants with two belts on either thigh, his hands are decidedly underdressed compared to the rest of him.

There is no word of greeting for Vander, merely eye contact which serves as both his welcome and acknowledgment. An expectantness about it all. It's hard to say whether or not Barnabas has been waiting there the whole hour. One can hope he didn't, but that doesn't mean that he didn't. He's...an odd man at the best of times.]

[Vander didn't bother to reply further, had no reason to fill the network with more typing. He had set a meeting and unless the other person wanted to talk, he expected that he knew what Barnabas was about. The guy was not a big talker, which meant that action was required to actually take the other man's measure.

Show up he did. On time. Of course, he could be observed walking to the place, but he arrived at the entrance within a minute or two when he said that he would. Of course, he noticed Barnabas as he closed the distance, and Vander was wearing one of two outfits that he actually owned: a striped white shirt, brown pants and boots. He was adorned plainly with a thick belt and a knife strapped to his left thigh. He'd taped his knuckles in a typical brawler style.

He came to a stop when he was reached the opposite side of the arena. Unlike Barnabas, Vander had no issue talking.]

Were you waiting for the entire hour for me to arrive?

It was here or within Stonhyrr itself. Little difference in the end.

[Most might want to chill in their house for the interim instead of standing outside for an hour, but most aren't Barnabas. Maybe he finds the thundering above and the sound of the violent waters below...comforting. Who's to say, really, how he holds himself does not reveal much of anything of that sort, anyway.

He does take in the whole of Vander, large man that he is. He reminded him of Hugo, and seemed to favor his fists much the same. This worked well enough for Barnabas, he was able to adjust his fighting style as was needed to match his opponent.

Though the knife does not go without notice.

Silently Barnabas readies himself, his stance shifting with one foot slightly forward, while the other in line behind it and spaced, feet turned perpendicularly; his weight even on both. He bends his knees slightly as his back remains straight, shoulders relaxed as his arms slightly extend forward, his hands splayed yet relaxed.

His intense stare fixed on Vander. Clearly he does not think terms need to be agreed upon, here...]

The difference being the impression it provides the other person. I do enjoy the ambiance too by the way.

[Ominous castle with its dark colours and lighting with the crashing waves and the brooding aura about it. This was not his first time here, and he doubted it would be his last if he was planning on earning himself a sparring partner out of the deal. He did have to wonder if Barnabas has similar powers and petrification as Cid, but now was not the time to ask.

Vander noticed the change in stance, and he made no effort on his part to follow suit. No, he remained standing calmly for a time, studying the stance as a man who had been engaging in fist fights for a very, very long time. At this distance, they were incapable of engaging physically, but the stance told him of Barnabas' confidence and some of his skill.

He strode forward at an easy gait, his arms remaining at his sides, his eyes intent to study for changes in the other man's stance. It looked similar to how he had simply walked up to the place, closing the distance without urgency and providing nothing of his own skill in the process. He waited and watched to see what Barnabas would do.]

[Barnabas says nothing to that, neither disagreeing or agreeing. Instead he continues to watch Vander, observe him, as a panther might an object worthy of its attention. Sizing it up as either prey or predator, though Barnabas knows well none save one could ever prove to be his latter. Yet, as Vander approaches, Barnabas moves—not towards Vander, but away with careful and measured steps.

He does not move far, just enough out of Vander's reach, circling to maintain this distance while avoiding putting himself on the threatening edge of the arena. Still he makes no strike of his own. There is no concern in his movements, only the certainty that comes with years of discipline, calculation in each step, his eyes unblinkingly focused on Vander.]

[Vander changed course only to follow Barnabas in the circling so that his back was never to the other man. He kept his pace even at first before he began to subtly shift his weight on his feet sharply to faint the other man and see how Barnabas' defenses shifted to a potential attack.

After all, he had no idea how this man fought and he was perfectly willing to take things slow before he decided to make a bolder move. Instead, he tested, speeding up a step or two and then slowing back down.]

[He does not rise to the feint, watching closely in how Vander moves, maintaining that distance that keeps him from arm's length, a distance that would require a more committed lunge to reach him, and so he remains calm and watchful, but does not over correct. Nor does he move to deflect, the space between them offers ample ability to determine should such be needed.

Thus he makes no move to strike even still. Only moving to maintain that distance when Vander gets a little too close, a game of patience if anything at all. Should Vander wish to likewise stare him down, Barnabas will do much the same. After all, a spar is not only physical, it is also mental, and with each moment of inaction there is the compounding weight of anticipation that lays heavy upon the mind. Barnabas' resolve has been tempered over decades, and so he is not wont to grow weary for a silent mental spar, if that is what this becomes.

Even from this he can take Vander's measure. He is cautious, younger men would charge at Barnabas like impatient fools, but not this man. There is some wisdom in his approach. Is that why Cidolfus fancies him?]

[Vander had fought a lot of people over the course of his lifetime, so he had learned patience with experience. It was clear that this guy was not about to make the first move but maintain a steady distance as they took one another's measure. Both of them were clearly battle-hardened.

Others might be pressed to make a move, but he saw the mental battle for what it was. He did push in faster without striking at times, thought often enough flexed one shoulder or twitched an elbow to make it seem like he was readying strike. The anticipation and tension was rising as they performed their own unique footwork to try to counter one another, pushing and pulling with body language.

Unlike most people here, he didn't have fantastical abilities or enhancements. He had what he had, and he was completely confident in his abilities.]
