Their existence is something bigger than ours, a "god" by human standards. There's differing beliefs on what such a being looks like, but some purpose that god is not "a person" or otherwise that they can do irreparable harm by interacting with sentient beings.
But then, given that they've been able to shape this place and were thoughtful enough to provide a messenger, it seems more likely that it's part of the game that they're playing. You can't ask the teacher for the answers when you're taking a test, can you?
