A dead enemy cannot rally, true. But a broken enemy rallies nothing and serves as a monument to your strength. Which frightens the living more: a corpse, or a warning that still breathes?

I require no monuments. I have found discarded corpses to be enough incentive in the past. Is the subject of frightening the living on the same topic of mercy/justice/consequences?

Corpses inspire obedience for a season, but fear without structure rots into rebellion. Mercy spares, justice balances, consequence teaches, and fear deters. They are related, yes, but not the same. Fear is a performance of consequence rather than its completion. Use it well and you command the living. Use it poorly and you breed only future enemies.

Future enemies are a concern for those in command. I am the weapon by which consequence is dispensed, nothing more. But it seems you are otherwise; do you command armies? A lone agent?

I should think mercy would not be much of a concern for one willing to take the law into their own hands and strike where they please in the name of justice/vengeance/consequence.

Vigilante, yes, and gladly so. Mercy amuses me, but it does not satisfy. To take the law in my own hands is to feel the weight of consequence as keenly as the one who suffers it. I do not strike where I please. I strike where the hunger is loudest, and I relish the sound of debts being paid in flesh and fear.
