Welcome to our bi-monthly CHIRPER post!

There are a few ways to interact with CHIRPER:

Characters receive a notification to please fill out the form, which is fully optional. There is a character requirement of two characters per answer field. This is to discourage leaving the spaces blank.
When forms are not filled out, they can be filled out by the companion bots of Etraya, or by other characters on behalf of their friends! This includes the Q&A section.
Characters can either like or dislike others' CHIRPER profiles. These responses are public.
This is voluntary on an OOC basis; if the character doesn't have a profile completed by themselves or anyone else, nothing shows up for them on CHIRPER.
For those who do post a top level, CHIRPER profiles are worth five extra points regardless of if they are put up willingly by the character themselves. These five extra points do apply to the 25 maximum per month.

This month there is a special 👻 SPOOKY SEASON 👻 addition: instead of ✓ or ✕ for like or dislike, it's 🎃 and 💀. Whatever the character has the most votes for shows up appended to their username on the network for the next month, as in, un: aurora 💀.

[ Oh, now he's very alarmed. ]

He's a chemist and a psychiatrist? When could the man possibly have the time to do both? In any case, that is a very far cry from being a pharmacist -- and compounding pharmacies are notoriously unregulated free-for-alls, for that matter. Please for the sake of my blood pressure do not take any substances he offers you unless they've been independently verified to do what he says they will do.

Aww you worried I'll tweak out on you, sir?

I'm hardly entitled to opine on what you do in a private and safe environment, up to and including recreational drugs. But I am worried about your well-being and the possibility that you could be taken advantage of by an unscrupulous drug dealer masquerading as a legitimate medical professional, yes.

[He's not used to this. What does he do? What's he expected to do here?]

I won't let you down, sir.

I appreciate that, but that is not my concern. On the contrary, if Dr. Crane does anything untoward or that you are displeased with, inform me immediately and I will handle it.

[What do you say to that? He just fucked up, he's braced to be punished for it, and Harold is talking like this. Like it still matters. Like Bossie doesn't deserve a little just desserts from Crane for what he did to that kid.

So he doesn't answer for a long time. His hands are shaking too much to type. What he finally manages is just:]

[ The problem with this being over text is that Harold really has no idea how to receive this type of response, but ultimately, he has to let Bossie be his own person and make his own decisions. He's so private himself that he respects the right to privacy in others utterly. If he doesn't want to say more, then he won't press. Instead: ]

I've informed Ms. Shaw of your assignment. I suspect she's making ready as we speak, but just to be clear on the parameters, there's really no urgency and I don't expect Mr. Rosfield to be inhospitable. Don't push yourselves unduly.

[Stop, he tells himself, and just tries to breathe until his hands are steady. That doesn't work. But he used to keeping his face calm so he switches to audio.]

Yes, sir. What do you hope to learn most?

[ The switch to audio surprises him; he sounds a little cautious, but completely composed, as he replies. ]

It's a precautionary measure. If you run into Mr. Rosfield then a threat assessment would be helpful, but mostly I'd like you to become familiar with the monastery's layout in case we need to infiltrate it later.

Also, I have a small personal favor to ask as an aside, if you don't mind.

[Recon. Okay. he likes those missions; he can do that.

The request makes him nervous, but he keeps it from his voice.]

Anything, sir.

[ The way his tone is so controlled tells Harold enough. His turns gentle. ]

Would you give Sameen a hug when you see her? She seems to think she's somehow deficient at them.

[Well that manages to shake him right out of his fear motivated ten thousand yard stare]

Wh-

She doesn't? [he laughs] She's plenty good at it.

[Good at kissing anyway, which isn't the same thing but it's close.]

She'll knee me in the nuts if I hug her, sir. [he sounds amused. It's not a 'no'.]

[ This implies they've hugged already, which is not the impression Shaw gave, but Harold isn't going to pry here, either. He's smiling in relief at the break in tone in Bossie's voice. ]

I think you'll be surprised. I have on good authority that she has a soft spot for teammates.

[ That authority is Shaw herself. ]

Don't let her demeanor fool you; she's as human as the rest of us.

Copy that. I'll hug the shit out of her, sir.

[Prove she's as human as he is.]

If she does indeed kick me to the ground, I hope you have a good picture of a sparrow to show me to make it better. Sir.

[ Harold is actually starting to get the sense that when Carver said he's a good kid, he actually meant that Bossie has the only modicum of social intelligence among the lot of them. In the absence of Root -- who usually used hers as a weapon, not nearly so earnestly as this -- Harold is surprised and pleased to find he might not be totally alone in that. It changes his calculus for how he manages Bossie, too. ]

I can do better than a sparrow, I promise.

[ In light of what he's just concluded... ] But to ensure your success, I'll tell you her favorite sandwich -- the deli should be able to manage it.

[He's not wrong. Bossie is the only one who still sobs over deep losses, who feels things with his whole heart.]

Oh, uh... Roast beef. Lots of horse radish. Sir. But she won't care about that.

[ He keeps making sure to say sir and it keeps setting the hair on his arms on end, but Harold is too wise to comment on it directly. ]

Not quite. Pastrami, both kinds of mustard, and an unholy amount of pepperoncini. Absolutely no mayonnaise.

[ He could say that it's a memory of a better time, but he doesn't. He does think it will remind Shaw of a time when reality wasn't in question, before she was tormented whole cloth by a heinous intelligence and even worse men. He thinks it's worth a try. So Harold says: ]

Try it and find out. It used to work quite consistently.

Mayonnaise is an affront to God. [is he playing now? Maybe a little, before he remembers that in a few hours Harold will waterboard him to put him back in place. But after that, things will be okay.]

I'll try it, sir. I'll make sure she eats something she likes.

[ He's so, so immensely relieved to have returned to this place of humorous rapport after how this conversation started out. Harold is fiercely thankful for one long moment before he responds, making sure he sounds even and pleasant. ]

Thank you. If it doesn't work then I'll take complete responsibility -- throw me under the bus, as it were.

[He's not expecting that. It stirs him up the way he'd been when he first realized Finch was every bit as loyal as Bossie suspected.]

No can do, sir. I'll take her knee to the balls for you. [he's teasing now.] I'll see you for bird pictures after the mission, all right?

Ms. Shaw would never be so unsportsmanlike as to take out her ire on a noncombatant, [ Harold says with dry amusement, returning the teasing with easy banter. ] I feel quite safe.

But yes, certainly. Mac and cheese and bird pictures it is.

[ He sounds just as comfortable dropping the elaborate vocabulary as he sounds when he's using it. ]

[Harold will drowned him or punish him in some way that makes them even. And Bossie will endure it because he wants them to be on even footing again. And then things will be okay. They can look at pictures of rare birds together. Bossie can show him all the bird calls he's taught himself since he was very small. Maybe Harold will like that.

They'll be even for Bossie's transgressions against Accelerator. And things will be okay again.]

Sir? What's your sandwich?

[ As always, Harold is surprised when someone else remembers he exists as an individual person, and he's just a tiny bit flustered before he finds his voice enough to reply smoothly. ]

If I'm being totally honest, it's not a sandwich at all. I'm partial to pastries.

[ Considering he once made John seriously work for it just to tell him he likes eggs benedict, Harold has come a very long way. ]

[Pastries are tricky things aren't they? Especially for someone who hasn't really learned to bake. But okay. A challenge.]

I know a cute French girl. Bet she knows all kinds of good Pastries.

I am particularly fond of French pastries, [ Harold admits in the tone of a wry confession. ]
