There's a lot to criticize about it, his methodology and shit he wouldn't have thought of in the 1950s when he came up with the theory, but I'm not gonna get into that. The gist is that every person has a bunch of needs in order to have a safe, stable and healthy life. Basically, this is the shit you need to be thinking about for a better life, since you can have that around here. It starts with physiological needs like food and shelter, then safety, then interpersonal needs and having a social structure, then self-respect and respect from other people, and at the end is self-actualization, being the best person you can be.
So 'Not worrying about dying' is the bare-fucking-minimum of it all. You can use the place for food if you don't want to go to the convenience store or whatever, or a place where you feel safe, or somewhere to talk to other kids.
[That last one is something he had to consider for Last Order. Socialization at a young age is very important, and Laura needs to have friends her age.]
