[ The woman's voice that scrapes through the network's channel keeps low and calm, with a vocal fry that is uttered in a distinctly English accent. ]

The dragon of recent arrival, whom I believe to be named Zhaera, wishes nothing to do with us, and so I would suggest leaving her be. Her only concern seems to be in mothering, and the power she wields would be no small thing if she feels the need to defend her nest. Best not to invite her ire when she has yet any cause to make of herself a monster.

She knows even less than we do about her sudden appearance. Perhaps if she did, she would not be so willing to keep to her singular cause.

I should also think that the serpents deserve no ill will en masse unless they become an immediate threat. I'm of no mind to make demands, but perhaps they can be herded into the woods where they can better find the prey they likely crave. A task I am willing to take on should any with the skill wish to assist.

Aurora has given us few choices aside from what we do with these trials presented.

[ The pause that follows is not from hesitation, but a drag that includes a whispered exhale of smoke that remains unseen on the network. Should anyone happen upon where she's seated on a bench near the café and bookstore, Vanessa—in all of her black-laced glory—is smoking a joint.

The rasp softens with her murmur. ]

We are all outsiders, after all.

I prefer to save any unraveling for the second date.

[Haaaaah. It's what Aelwyn Abernant would say, she reminds herself.]

On occasion. Although it depends on how you would define "demons." Every world I've come across seems to have a different interpretation.

I would wager you're from Earth, right? Or at least, you've probably heard of it. So I don't need to explain it.

There was an active hostility against magic over there in the specific town and organization I landed in that was quite bizarre to get used to. They were very afraid of it, for a variety of reasons ranging from fair to deeply hypocritical and stupid.

Never quiet though.

No, nothing so medieval.

The common sentiment in the time period I lived in was that things like witches or magic don't exist, which meant that I was asked to neuter myself in order to maintain that facade. I was raised as a wizard from a very young age, it's a very fundamental part of who I am. I defied that order when I could, as a way to avoid being deemed too much trouble for what I was worth (I was worth a lot).

[Did you serve a master.

Wizards don't serve masters. They learn on their own, they come into their own power through their own abilities.

Except Aelwyn always has served. First her parents, then Kalina, then The Desolation. It makes her grimace in irritation on the other side of the screen.]

No. I've had bosses but that had nothing to do with my magic.

I gained my power through extensive study and experience.

[Half a lie.]

A lot of teachers. I went to an academy for it.

My planet, Spire, it has a lot of them scattered about the place. Particularly in this one country called Solace that primarily runs on an export of professional killing machines and mercenaries. My father was the ambassador there, so my sister and I had to attend school there.

Not particularly.

They say prostitution is the oldest profession but I think that's only because mortals and planars alike were killing people long before they realized they could charge money for it. The universe - multiverse, really - is built off violence. Always has been.
