[So getting used to this new kind of technology was certainly an… experience. He still isn’t really comfortable with the idea of a video recording of himself, and even an instantaneous voice transmission is beyond the level of tech he’s accustomed to so text is the way to go. Unfortunately, he’s using this like some sort of magical LinkedIn, so it’s a very formal letter style he’s got going on.]

Hello,

My name is Jayce Talis. I’ve noticed there’s a few buildings here that seem to be laboratories. If any have availability to lend a room or two, I have research and device development I would like to work on. Ideally if there’s any access to a forge of some sort, that would be preferred, but not required. I have a personal reference if necessary to demonstrate good character.

[He notably does not say anywhere that there will probably be explosions.]

[ It is noticeable, the way that Jayce doesn't react. People try to be subtle, or to keep it subtle, but it's happened enough--the small flinch of eyes, or heads, the prolonged stares, even if they aim to cut them short--that even Gorgug recognises them. Even if he used to just find it strange to begin with.

But what Gorgug also notices? This guy is older looking. And human-looking, which isn't a surprise around here. But Gorgug looks at the café once, then back at the man. ]

I don't want to knock into anything showing you-- how it works? [ He looks at the octopus as he says this, who looks fine being just where it is in the meantime. Though it does loosen its limb curled around Gorgug's arms as he moves them both to extract the heavy metal axe from his back. He places it at his side, and if Jayce listens carefully, he might be able to catch a soft humming coming from it.

The centre between two thick blades continues to softly swirl, a dark, thick liquid. ]

I also thought--you talked about forges. I didn't make this, but-- it's really cool. The blades are adamantium, and then the stuff in the middle's a gravitational material to make it lighter.

[ He carefully settles down the axe, and manages to make it rest on the ends of the blade's curved ends, letting it sit up. Less showing off (okay, maybe a little), and more so Gorgug can let it go and free up his hand. ]

[He’s only 32, Gorgug, give him a break.

That axe, though.]

Wow.

[He’s immediately impressed, trying to forget about the cold as much as he can so he can half-circle around the weapon, the dark molten-like core at the center of it drawing his eye.]

Adamantium? I don’t know of that- sounds like titanium? Any similarities? And the center core, I’ve used a similar technique before.

[He’s fully circling it now, squatting to get a better look at the way it balances perfectly on it’s blades.]

Do you mind if I…?

[He wants to pick it up, feel the weightlessness of it himself.]

[ Gorgug nods when Jayce mentions titanium, recognising the material. But then Jayce is asking about picking it up, and.... Gorgug gives Jayce a look over, and then at his axe.

... ]

It's still heavy. But you can give it a go.

[ Gorgug isn't going to stop him! What if the guy's stronger than he looks? Gorgug's lanky-looking himself, so it's not like a person would think he could carry anything heavy.

So, Jayce: can you lift 120lbs? Because you might be about to try.

(Gorgug will catch the handle if you're about to topple it over, and how he coooolly made it balance!!) ]

[Jayce claps his hand together, puffs on them with his breath to make sure they’re warm enough his grip isn’t going to slip, and reaches for the handle. It’s a momentary struggle to lift, needing to adjust his grip for both hands, but he’s able to lift it into the air and heft it over his shoulder, feet shifting and his back hunches a little with the effort of making sure he doesn’t drop it.

He exhales out a breath he had been holding with a laugh.]

This is…! Way heavier than it looks!

[But he isn’t complaining, he looks pretty thrilled, actually.]

There's no way I could swing this around.

[If just carrying it on his shoulder was tough, the upper body strength needed to whip it around without additional gravitational negation would be impossible for him.]

[ Gorgug's nodding. ] It's okay, my friends can't swing it either. But it's really light for being a heavy metal. It would be a lot heavier if you tried lifting it without the gravitational centre.

[ Gorgug will help Jayce if he needs a hand getting it off from his shoulder, but he also doesn't rush the guy, either. It's okay. Let him enjoy holding a large axe for a while!!

Instead, he's showing off his hands, covered in gloves. The fingers are visible, but the gloves also appear to not be a simple, smooth layer of leather. ]

I had to start wearing these because of it. But it helps with my artificing too. I can concentrate magic that's in me into them, and put it into a weapon, or anything. We use magic in a lot of stuff-- we use it for talking to people, too.

[ Maybe Gorgug's starting to feel a little excited, too... he never gets to talk to another person who knows about artificing. Even if he didn't use that word--he's a magical engineering guy! ]

[It is nice to hold, if only because he misses his own Honestly Too Big weapon, but unlike his, the gravitational core on this one doesn't alleviate as much of the weight. He could swing a sixty, even seventy pound hammer around, but this one's a bit much. With a nod, steps back to slide it off his shoulder, using it's momentum to land it on the ground again, blade side upright as Gorgug had left it.]

There could be ways to make it even lighter, but it looks like that's not much of an issue for you.

[And there's benefit in that sometimes. If no one else can pick up your weapon, no one can say... walk away with it or threaten to use it against you.]

How do you do that? Channel your own magic? Do you use runes, or phrases, or is it just intuitive?

And "Artificing"... that's what you call it when you infuse magic into the tools?

[Hope Gorgug's ready to explain it all, because the questions don't stop coming and they won't stop coming.]

[ Those are some questions. And he should start from last to first, right? Let's see how he can get through this!! ]

Yeah, it's-- when you put magic and engineering together? So when you're the person making them and not just, the guy setting up what you made. [ Right... does that make sense...!! He's squinting a little, wanting to think of an example, except, oh-- ]

Alchemy falls under artificing, too. Making potions? Do you have that?

[ Look, he'll keep with answering the questions, but he's looking at Jayce like, does this sound familiar too? ]

[It does make sense to him, and Jayce nods along in understanding.]

Alchemy?

[Not really his thing. But he supposes chemtech technically counts as that, doesn't it?]

In a sense. Utilizing chemical reactions to trigger mechanical and biological effects, that's more Chemtech's style. Not really something I'm well versed in, but it's possible in my universe.

[ Gorgug nods. ] I haven't studied it either, but it's a branch. And then some of us focus more towards healing and protection, and then there's artillery... weapon makers.

[ He looks at his hands, and then holds them out. He's wearing fingerless gloves, but the gloves themselves are padded, with particular bumps in places. ]

These help me channel magic. Basically, there's crystals under the padding- [ he points to spots, on the palm and on the upper side where the material bulges, but slightly, ] -and they're all connected, and they help me draw out the magic inside me, and translate it. I can't do that with everything-- I need other gadgets if I want something more specific, 'cause the spell's... you need certain energies and commands to make a device do something, right?

[ He pauses, thinking. ] So my gloves are for anything I need to touch... and then if I want to read information, I use-- [ he touches his goggles ] --these.

I still need to concentrate for some spells like wizards or spellcasters, but it's more... I'm skipping the incantations through my gadgets. But I'm still the conductor.

[Potions, healing, or weapon makers. Huh.

The gloves are interesting though. They help Gorgug hold such a massive weapon, and also redirect the flow of his own “innate” magic. What he wouldn’t give for something like that, if it would actually work for him.]

Right, like a rune network. So the gloves work as a means of channelling with only broad translations. Vague things.

[At least that’s how he’s figuring it, in his own way. He’s cupping his chin as he looks them over, tilting his head a little.]

And the goggles are for detail work, more nuanced commands? The difference between telling something to “go” and telling it to go at a certain speed for a certain amount of time. Do I have it right?

[Gloves with runes built into them. Sort of what he made with the Atlas Gauntlets, but given that the purpose was purely to crush, it was a very basic set of runic instructions.]

Did you make these? The goggles, I mean.

I did, but, my parents-- they're tinkerers. They helped me design them. I didn't make the idea behind them, but-- goggles are cool. And I can make them zoom in or save data... I mean, you can make anything you make as simple or as complicated as you want it. Mine might be pretty simple... I was thinking about making some new ones.

[ He thinks about touching them again, making himself unsure about how cool or not cool they are, but instead looks at Jayce, and then back at the café building. ]

Sorry if you're getting cold. Uh, are you--okay? I wanted to ask you about how you use magic in technology too, if you could make stuff like this-- we could sit in the café after all, if you wanted...

[ As the octopus starts to move one of its two arms from around Gorgug's back to now up the side of his head...

He's just going to bop it back down. ]

Goggles are cool, [Jayce nods in agreement. He might not be the most unbiased judge.]

And those ones seem really useful too. What would you want the newer ones to do differently?

[Honestly, he’s so into the conversation, he forgot the chill of the air for a while. It’s only when he’s reminded again that he realizes he’s starting to feel his nose start to get runny from the cold.]

Oh- yeah, let’s go in, before I start sneezing.

[With a huff of a laugh at the octopus crawling up Gorgug’s head, he starts to head back into the café, holding the door open for Gorgug to duck in.]

Make equipment like yours?

I think I’d need to study it more. I’m not used to making things that harness someone’s uh… internal? Connection to the arcane. But having something to work backwards from is a lot easier than starting entirely from scratch. Tentative maybe?

More power, and-- better scanning, really. They can scan stuff from my world okay, but there's a lot more energies, and-- signatures of energies here than they're made to identify. So I wanna make them better for telling what something is...because of where we are.

[ An upgrade suited for the multiverse, really. But Gorgug follows in after Jayce--hesitant at first when it comes to going through the door, but he does do it. He doesn't know if Jayce had a seat previously, but he is eyeing a table close to the door. ]

Um, you could just make them with the system you use... maybe? If you're using an outside source-- teleportation's pretty cool. You don't have any other gadgets?

[ But while he asks, he does also point to that table he was looking at-- ] Can we sit here?

[Jayce’s eyes light up the more Gorgug explains his plan for the newer goggles.]

That’s exactly what I was planning on doing! Okay, no, not exactly, but very close. Sure, take a seat anywhere. I don’t think the bots are going to mind.

[He did have a seat further in but they basically have the place to themselves, who’s going to mind? If Gorgug wants the one closest to the door, he’ll join him there.]

I have… a few other things I’ve made.

[The gauntlets, which became weapons. His hammer, a weapon. He’s not proud that most of his accomplishments are weapon-based. But with a sigh, he holds up his hand.]

Don’t judge, but…

[He reaches into one of his inside pockets and pulls out a miniature replica of his Mercury Hammer. This one is only seven inches tall.]

I made a seven foot version of this. Antigravity, pulse cannon, electric field generator…

[ Don't judge? Gorgug's wondering what he means, and then... Jayce pulls out a tiny hammer. Which, you know, it's cool-looking, but is he about to tell him that he makes toys?

No, what Jayce says instead might as well be keywords into cool. Antigravity? Pulse cannon? Electric field generator?? ]

Like an electric-powered shield, or a power and signal source you can move around?

[ Look, all that other stuff is cool too, it is! And Gorgug wants to ask more about that hammer now? He's glancing at it like it's going to unveil its secrets, but--!

One (or five) questions at a time. He also wants to ask more about what Jayce wanted to make...!! ]

Electric-powered sphere shield, proximity-based, approximately six foot radius from here as the center point-

[He points toward the handle part on the miniature.]

... but I don't have it here. And that's a good thing.

[Is it? He doesn't seem like he means that when he says it.]

[ Okay. He's pointing at the weapon, and-- the weapon does all that? And he definitely wants to ask, but-- the man is saying no to the weapon?

The man is saying no to the cool weapon? ]

Why?

[ He doesn't sound disappointed (yet), but he does look like a kid who just got told Jayce is banned from eating ice cream.

And that's terrible. ]

It's dangerous.

[He knows that far too well.]

I developed Hextech to help people, not make weapons.

[Even then, he toys with the small hammer, letting it rest upside down with the head of it on the table as he pushes the shaft of it back and forth, looking at it with some longing.]

The moment you make a hammer, every problem becomes a nail.

[ He looks at the small replica of the weapon, a slight tilt to his head. Not as quick to disagree as he usually would, but sitting in the café makes him-- a little too aware of the irony of doing that, despite the enthusiasm he just had.

...still. ]

...Yeah, but-- it's your weapon, right? Not everyone...is like that. I can't solve all my problems with my axe. But sometimes... a problem is a nail. Or a tree in the way.

[ He's trying to sound encouraging, yet- he doesn't look at Jayce optimistically. Instead, he looks at him half-heartedly, placing his gaze back onto the table. ]

It's not always about other people.

[They both seem to make eye contact with one another, and then glance away in different directions, Jayce's gaze going out through the large windows next to them instead.]

... Your goggles. So. What... kind of material do you plan on using for the new ones? Brass?

[ Oh.

It's too familiar (too similar), that Gorgug doesn't want to observe it; only peeking a look towards Jayce, but then turning his gaze away. The table is interesting. The table isn't threatening to reflect anything he doesn't want to talk about. ]

Y-yeah, brass would be... good. [ His voice is softer, a note quieter. ] I just need to make...the space inside around the glasses more compatible for wiring, and add the right crystals... and work it up to the lenses. Y-you do that for your power too? Um- run it through wiring, and-- stones, or circuitry?

[ Just two nerds having a very normal conversation, here. ]

[Very normal conversation where they talk about engineering and mechanics to avoid talking about their problems with misplaced emotions!]

Metal circuitry, sort of?

[Jayce runs a hand through his hair, shaking himself out of his thoughts.]

I didn’t use wiring in the way I noticed most things here do. The colored tubes with copper strands inside. I use copper too, but forged into the items themselves— part of the process when I’m building the piece. Once the runes are carved in and filled with copper as well, all it needs is the conductor— the gemstone— and it’s ready to go.

[ Gorgug nods, listening to Jayce. ]

Artificer's wiring is like that, too. You use metals... to make the links to the stones, and you connect them to switches. But you can put spells or...spells, I guess, into the stones. But-- it depends on what you're making. The stone can be enough-- if you program it right. It becomes its own program, so.

[ He points to the octopus just hanging off him. ] --it's got a big stone in it. And its eyes are lenses made from a magic material, so I can record what it sees. Or work with it later. We use dream crystals for that. For a lot of lens work.

[ The octopus doesn't speak, nor does it seemingly do much more than watch--watches Jayce, or the fact that it doesn't have eyelids makes it appear to be watching them. Its eyes are a semi-opaque material, however, if he has a closer look, while everything else about it is a metal material. ]
