You live alone?

Yeah, nobody else lives in this place but me. [she says as she's scratching behind Bear's ears and then moving over to where she keeps her alcohol.]
What do you like best? Like I said, I got a lot. A friend went overboard for me.
no subject
[She moves into the apartment, looks around for a couch to flop down on... and then immediately conjures up the mental image of a stereotypical therapist's office, complete with fainting couch. No thanks, she'll take a dining chair instead.]
I'll take two if you're going to try to make me do smalltalk.
no subject
she gets the drinks for her and sets them down in front of her on the coffee table she has before she walks off to get herself a drink, a simple rum and coke and sits on the couch. Maria puts her feet up on the coffee table with a shrug.]
We don't have to talk. We can just sit here in silence.
no subject
Ugh, no; that's even worse. We're going to have to talk. It's regrettable, but inevitable.
no subject
I'll let you pick the topic. See? All in your hands.
no subject
How'd you and Harold meet?
[Her eyes flick back to that very pink couch, and she adds:]
And has he ever been here?
no subject
There was this free tea being given out and he warned me about free food around here then brewed me his own tea. Saved my ass. Apparently the tea had something in it that made you tell the truth. He's been helping me out ever since then.
And yeah, he's been here. Just once, about a week back.
no subject
I'm guessing he wasn't doing so hot.
no subject
[and so yeah, she had some ideas about Shaw. not a ton. but she probably lost someone. Maria has no plans on making Shaw discuss that but it's her subtle way of letting her know she knows something.]
This place isn't fair. Giving you these memories at the worst times. [even changes the subject to let her know she's got no expectations.]
no subject
I wasn't given anything, I've had it all along. Took the other two a while to get with the times.
no subject
[she talks casually mostly because she assumes Shaw doesn't want to hear the whole 'I'm so sorry' spiel. she is sorry, how could she not be? but nobody wanted to hear how sorry somebody was again and again.]
My point about this place still stands I guess. I got memories back right before the mission so yeah, timing is awful.
no subject
[She hopes not, though. Gross.]
It's disorienting enough from the outside looking in. Actually experiencing it must be even worse.
no subject
Yeah, people suddenly knowing all this stuff. It's weird, right? But this entire place is weird. You think you'd get used to it.
no subject
[She doesn't say it derisively - she's just stating a fact. Shaw isn't at all surprised that she hasn't gotten used to being here, and she very much doubts that she ever will.]
You just, uh... keep moving forward anyway, I guess. That's a little different from getting used to it.
no subject
Yeah. Call it the optimist in me, I guess. [she takes a sip of her drink and smiles.] Gotta hold onto something, y'know? Better than doing nothing.
no subject
[Her tone is flat, bordering on sardonic - but she shoots Maria a raised eyebrow and watches her face carefully, genuinely curious about her answer. She's never been able to slot herself easily into one category or the other.]
no subject
I think we're all just realists. Some are just a little naive, one way or the other. [she takes a sip of her drink and shrugs.] Too down to see the opportunities or just haven't been knocked down enough to see the lack of 'em. If I'm making any sense.
no subject
Sure.
[It's not too far off from how she sees things, anyway.]
I'm pessimistic enough to call something a losing battle, but optimistic enough to fight it anyway. Sounds about right.
no subject
But calling myself an optimist sounds nicer. Everybody loves an optimist. [then she snorts.] Maybe not a pessimist.
no subject
[Shaw drawls, mirroring her point right back at her.]
Being universally beloved sounds like a drag; I'm good with relative anonymity.
no subject
I've had enough of anonymity. [it's lonely.] Might as well try the whole universally beloved thing. Keep things new and exciting. Idle is the devil's playground and all that jazz, right?
no subject
[Shaw asks, furrowing her brow. Sorry, Maria; with folks like Team Machine who live in the shadows as a matter of course, you might have to say the quiet part out loud sometimes.]
no subject
I'm lonely. [it's said with a shrug.]
no subject
It's good you're friends with Finch. I think he gets lonely, too.
