If money has no meaning here, then what do people do with themselves? Adventure for the sport of it? Build things only to watch them gather dust?

I prefer problems that bite back or explode in my hands, but it seems difficult to call that work in a place where every need is already seen to.

So. What passes for an occupation here—when merit and coin are both irrelevant?

Reassuring, truly. Between the nitpicking, pretending, book-reading, and drinking, it seems the city won’t lack for professional cynics. I’ll remember to avoid applying there, unless I develop a taste for boredom.

Ah, creativity. Of course. My mistake-I was under the impression that strapping myself to volatile machinery and coaxing it into functioning counted as such. Evidently, I’ve been doing it wrong.

As for sleeping the days away, I’ll leave that to your acquaintance. I’d hate to wake up and discover the city had become even more tedious without my supervision.

I should warn you, though-I carry three firearms and a frankly indecent number of bullets. That gives me a rather unfair advantage in your little pastime. Hardly sport, unless you enjoy starting at a disadvantage.

A library is at least a step in the right direction. Sleeping is a poor occupation, death rehearsed without the benefit of productivity. But a library implies records, ideas, perhaps even schematics worth stealing. Do they tolerate experiments in its halls, or am I expected to keep my explosions outside?

Money isn't my main motivation, but most of the ways I'm use to passing the time also seem pretty unavailable. It does feel strange.
There is probably a lesson about the psychological need to strive and the role of struggle in our lives, but learning it doesn't exactly solve the problem.
What did you do before you came here?

I rebuilt. Whitestone, most of all, though I lent a hand to Westruun and Emon when they were picking themselves back up. Clocks, lights, rifles. A mixture of the practical and the indulgent, depending on which day you ask me.

Before that, I was a lordling in a castle, reading too many books and making toys that smoked and broke. I have always had the habit of turning idle time into dangerous machinery.

So you see, I am woefully unsuited to a world without need. My work has always been born of necessity. If you strip necessity away, what remains is only compulsion.

And you? If coin was never your motivation, what did you call your reason before this place stripped it bare?

That sounds productive. Fresh meat is a fine reward, though I imagine the act of hunting is half the satisfaction.

Pictures and a recorder, you say. Curious terms, though I admit I’ve no notion what they entail. Are these sketches by hand, or some manner of device? And if it is a device, what precisely does it preserve — likeness, sound, something stranger?

If it keeps memory intact, that borders on sorcery in my experience. I should like to hear how it works.

If I were truly complaining there would be far more drama and considerably less patience. At present I am only pointing out the obvious absurdity of a world without coin. One must ask what remains when incentive is stripped away, or risk ending in aimless indulgence. I should hope you expect more from me than that.

I do have a pair of boots that does allow that very ability. They are rather useful in battle. I think that the only pair of boots that can beat them are Vax'ildan's boots of Haste.

I am Captain of the Fun Committee. My duties are to sleep until ten, pour wine, eat well, and make sure the ceaseless workaholics look up once in a while. As you can imagine I am very busy.

A noble office. Truly, civilization would collapse without its wine stewards and alarm clocks.

As for myself, I am more the type to take the clock apart and reassemble it until it either works better or explodes. So yes, perhaps I fall under your definition of workaholic. But I do occasionally remember to drink. Sometimes even before ten.

Right now? A lot of self imposed paperwork. Keeping sharp with training old and new abilities.

Building a stables. And setting up a kit to take with me on the next mission. Once bitten, and all that.

The paperwork ran out so it’s the later things I’m finishing and marking off.

Paperwork is one of those inescapable devils. Give it enough time, and even paradise will find a way to bury you in forms. A stable, though—that is tangible. Something that creaks, smells, and insists upon being maintained. Sensible choice.

What sort of kit, if I may ask? Emergency rations and a sharp knife, or are we talking something more… elaborate?

Boredom would be a mercy. What I am is restless.

It is one thing to work for coin or for survival. Quite another to wake each morning knowing there is no clock to beat, no scarcity to defy, no need that presses. One can tinker, yes, or hunt danger for its own sake, but the lack of consequence makes it all feel like a child’s game of dress-up.

So no, not bored. Irritated. And perhaps a little insulted that the world thinks so little of me as to demand nothing but to save my universe.
