um. i hope everyone is okay, after that stuff with looking for the vent.

i've been seeing some decorations? i think? and pumpkins? but i'm not sure what that's about. does anyone know? some of the other kids seem pretty excited...! and talking about dressing up? i'm not sure this was something we did back home, so. i guess there's still a lot to learn about things. different celebrations? or um, holidays! yeah! maybe we can celebrate lots of them! if there's people from all kinds of places, there's gotta be lots of holidays people celebrate that we can learn together, right? it'd be fun!

The term we use for the holiday that's happening this month is Halloween. It has decorations, pumpkins and people dressed up in all sorts of costumes.

I guess it could be fun to celebrate. Just remember to watch out for any random events.

As someone who'd been here since last year, it's best to assume that anything that wasn't set up by the companion bots is a part of a random event.

Sometimes, it's easy to tell if something's set up by the bots and other times it's not so easy to tell. Last year, we've got multiple bots putting up the appropriate decorations, setting up shops for costumes and offering candies. At the same time, Aurora sent out a message to everyone to not stay outside after midnight. For those who didn't listen to her warnings, we'd found out the hard way there are spirits that liked to lure people out with their illusions. Almost fell for one myself.

Yeah. They can be quite convincing with their illusions, so you wouldn't know you're being tricked until its too late. I'm not sure if something like that is going to happen with this year's halloween, but I'd advise you to stay on guard.

I can see that you've had some sort of answer from this Manny person, but from what I understand, this is a harvest type of festival that allows children to dress up like little goblins and imps so that they will not be whisked away by the dead and evil creatures when the veil between life and death is thinnest.

Of course, on modern day Earth, it's basically just a chance for children to go around in costumes so that people can admire them and give them sweets.

Yes, they believed that spirits would whisk away children that were out after dark. So they dressed them in costumes and masks to keep them safe. Over the years, it has become less for protection and more for fun.

It is very American holiday but has spread out to other lands. I have only recently had the opportunity to celebrate it, but I can see why it is enjoyed by more than just the children. It is a chance to have tamed scares.

Yes, exactly. It helps people not be afraid of things that aren't really there. If they can have controlled scares, it helps them feel the scare without the danger. I think it's close to something I've heard about adrenaline junkies.

People who are addicted to the feeling of elation that comes when you survive something your brain considers dangerous. I can understand it, but life is more than just exhilaration.

Yes, do you think life is only for seeking pleaasure? Sometimes, we must do things that we have to and do not make us happy. The problem with adrenaline junkies is that they continue to seek bigger and more dangerous 'highs'.

However, a desire for tamer scares that come with Halloween's time of year are mostly harmless.

it's almost halloween!!
where I'm from, it's a holiday where kids dress up in costumes and go to houses saying 'trick or treat' to get candy
that's the treat BUT there can still be tricks sometimes!
playing pranks on people or spooking them for fun is a big tradition too

have you ever carved a pumpkin before?
that's also a tradition
basically, it's carving out the front of the pumpkin in a face or something
and putting a light in it to make it glow all cool like
then you use the seeds and insides to cook or bake something nice!

wellll
they shouldn't be, but some people (usually, like, teenagers) can do harmful pranks
once of the classic ones though is just throwing toilet paper on someone's house or car to be silly
it's annoying to clean up, but doesn't hurt anyone

and yeah!!
it's for decoration, mostly
and just fun to be creative with

not usually!

and I can help you? if you'd like!
I love doing creative stuff like that
and last year, it was...
I was still pretty new so I didn't do much!

of course I can!!
that's the fun of meeting people from different places, right? learning new stuff!
I can get us a couple of pumpkins so we can work on it

do you want a regular sized one?
or mini? I don't wanna assume anything, but they do come in smaller sizes which might be easier!!
