Welcome to our bi-monthly CHIRPER post!

There are a few ways to interact with CHIRPER:

• Characters receive a notification to please fill out the form, which is fully optional. There is a character requirement of two characters per answer field. This is to discourage leaving the spaces blank.
• When forms are not filled out, they can be filled out by the companion bots of Etraya, or by other characters on behalf of their friends! This includes the Q&A section.
• Characters can either like or dislike others' CHIRPER profiles. These responses are public.
• This is voluntary on an OOC basis; if the character doesn't have a profile completed by themselves or anyone else, nothing shows up for them on CHIRPER.
• For those who do post a top level, CHIRPER profiles are worth five extra points regardless of if they are put up willingly by the character themselves. These five extra points do apply to the 25 maximum per month.

This month there is a special 👻 SPOOKY SEASON 👻 addition: instead of ✓ or ✕ for like or dislike, it's 🎃 and 💀. Whatever the character has the most votes for shows up appended to their username on the network for the next month, as in, un: aurora 💀.

And if I get one, will you teach me some of what you know? I suspect I have room for improvement given my friend’s child starts making faces any time the subject comes up.

Cows and crops.
It's a small family-run farm so they didn't have to specialize in one thing over another.
Also didn't make much money, but that's not what they cared about most.
And yeah, sure, I'd be glad to. Sounds kind of fun actually.

Farming’s quite the undertaking, just to break even. What did they care about?

Me, mostly. Only child, a long time coming.
And their friends, and people in their community. People in general.
I have really good parents.

Still farming, but they lease out a couple of fields now.
I think it's the closest Pa will get to retiring.

I'm only thirty so retirement's a long way off for me, I haven't thought about it much.

I genuinely don’t know! When does a person usually retire? Before coming here I hadn’t seen someone in their fifties since I was a girl, so I’ve never really thought about it.

Feel free to tell me to shut up if this is a sensitive topic or something, but — no one in their fifties? Really? Is there a reason for that?

Oh, it’s completely normal for me. You tell me to shut up if this is too much of a dark turn.

I grew up in a city that looks out at a monolith. Each year, a new number is painted on the monolith, and everyone that age would immediately pass away. When I was fifteen years old, the number fifty was painted, and that was the last of the fifties. When I was twenty-five, that was the last of the forties. Does that make sense?

I — sort of? I understand what you're saying, yes. But also no, absolutely not, that does not make logical sense. People just drop dead when a number is painted on a monolith?

It’s a lot less gruesome than that makes it sound, but yes. We don’t know why. It’s just been that way since the number was 100.

I am very sorry to hear that.
Does it go down by the same amount every year? Like a countdown?

Yes, like a countdown. The day you’re born and the maximum age you could ever be go hand-in-hand, because the number never goes up again.

Why does this happen?

We still don’t know. We’ve been trying to find out for generations.

I guess this might come off as kind of trite, but I really hope you do, in time.
I can't even imagine what that's like.

We'll keep putting our best & brightest on it. And frankly, we're here now! Etraya might offer us a better chance at stopping it than anything else we've tried. And if it doesn't, we've been preparing for the Last Generation for some years now. Last one out can turn the lights off, and all.

I'm glad you can't imagine it, though. There are some things we shouldn't even leave to our imaginations.

For what it's worth as someone from the outside, I think that's a really inspiring approach. Both parts.

Some people live like they're on vacation together. Some get part-time jobs or even post-retirement careers because they like having purpose. The general idea is that after you work your whole life, you can relax and not have to hustle so much during the golden years. Not everyone's able to do that, unfortunately.

That sounds so beautiful. I would have no shortage of hobbies, I think, but at the same time, most of my hobbies are rather rambunctious, so maybe I’ll have to retire those, too, and find something else.

Why can’t everyone do it?

Nothing wrong with finding new things to try. There's a lot in life to explore.
Finances, mostly. Not everyone has the money to retire or family to help out.

Don’t I know it. I could take up writing or painting, I suppose. I don’t really know what elderly people are capable of.
