[So getting used to this new kind of technology was certainly an… experience. He still isn’t really comfortable with the idea of a video recording of himself, and even an instantaneous voice transmission is beyond the level of tech he’s accustomed to so text is the way to go. Unfortunately, he’s using this like some sort of magical LinkedIn, so it’s a very formal letter style he’s got going on.]

Hello,

My name is Jayce Talis. I’ve noticed there’s a few buildings here that seem to be laboratories. If any have availability to lend a room or two, I have research and device development I would like to work on. Ideally if there’s any access to a forge of some sort, that would be preferred, but not required. I have a personal reference if necessary to demonstrate good character.

[He notably does not say anywhere that there will probably be explosions.]

Thank you for your time.

[Ahhh, it's so ironic that that's even the term he's using.]

You know, that word is goddamn hilarious. It's the exact opposite where I'm from: the gemstones are the ones born talented, and magicians are just talentless people trying to keep up with them.

That was how that brat explained it, anyways.

Twelve year olds are harsh.

So what are you planning to do here? Continue your research?

It's possibly a combination of things.

The wind turbines generate energy, but they aren't powering the place. You could probably look into the ley lines everywhere, they'd be a natural starting point if you're focusing on magic.
levelshift: (way too tired for this)

[personal profile] levelshift 2025-01-05 03:06 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not that kind of psychic.

[Another joke! He's hilarious.]

I have no idea if anyone's tried using that power for anything, but I'm guessing it could be harnessed mechanically. I'm still new to magic, so I don't know what kind of limits exist.

[He's been able to manipulate and use ley lines back home, but that was using his ability. Not everyone has that advantage.]

Anyways, they follow the rivers flowing through here.
levelshift: (who exactly are 'they'?)

[personal profile] levelshift 2025-01-05 08:21 pm (UTC)(link)
[Vander is on it!]

The flow of it is definitely measurable. I wouldn't have known they were there if it wasn't.

[Accelerator doesn't doubt there's some way to engineer a device to measure it. If technology back home can measure stuff like AIM, and he can measure it with his ability, it isn't outrageous to think it's possible.]

Learning and using it. Before coming here I had only known about it for a couple of months, and only used it a handful of times. I've spent most of my life thinking magic only existed in fiction.

I can track any kind of magic, ley lines or otherwise, as long as vectors are involved somehow.

[Just to clarify, since he figures Jayce would appreciate a more precise explanation.]

I can only explain how it works where I'm from. Chances are there are different laws governing it here. You still want to know?

[He's going to send this as a private message, since it's long and may end up getting somewhat personal.]

Vectors are a mathematical property of something that represents both magnitude and direction.

Okay. Remember I'm not a damn expert, I'm just relaying what was told to me.

There are different processes a person can use to cast magic back home. The most common one is to use your own life force, life energy, soul, or whatever the hell you want to call it. That doesn't matter, it's all the same energy that's flowing through you. The process refines that energy into magic, same as refining coal or crude oil into something usable. This is done by manipulating your body functions, which can be done in a bunch of different ways. Breathing techniques, fasting, meditation and warm-up exercises were the examples given to me. "You manipulate bodily functions such as the flow of blood and rhythm of the organs to bring them to the values you want." Her words, not mine.

Obviously that kind of shit can be dangerous, so from there the safest thing to do is utilize commands that match up with your wishes. Apparently you can do it from nothing, but that's incredibly inefficient, so magicians use commands based off of pre-existing beliefs, like legends or religions. Because people have been using magic for so long they've already weeded out the shit that's useless, so there's already a starting point for newbies to work from. That brat didn't advise coming up with entirely new commands and applications, because it's so much work and magic has basically already been completely optimized. There's no point.

Basic magic is pretty easy to cast with just your body. When it comes to more complicated incantations, magicians use specialized tools. If you're referencing a legend that uses a spear, your magic will be more effective if you're swinging a spear around, too. It's the same as trying to draw a straight line with just your hand, and trying to draw one using a straightedge. More efficient, better results. I have a bit more information about those tools, but that's the important stuff.

Using magic from stuff like leylines works different, apparently. Magicians can also call on pre-existing power from something called a phase. That's activated by invoking it through a person's own magic power. She likened it to a bomb and a fuse: the fuse causes a small explosion that in turn causes a much, much bigger reaction. It's a way for a magician to use a ton of power, but it also comes with its own risks.

Any questions?

[If he ever sees those notes he'll have to make some corrections.]

Yeah, fine. I've got nothing better to do.

I'd be interested in seeing your work even before the testing phase, too.

No idea who that is.

But you're not crazy for thinking about taking over an empty building.
[He's been skimming the messages here, what of it.] There's a lot of those around, just rotting away. Might as well get some use out of one of them.

If she's got a manor she must be pretty well off.

Hm.

There's a big circular building called S.T.A.R. Labs to the west of the hospital. From what I've seen of it, it seems pretty reinforced. I don't know if anyone's using it.

If you're concerned about magical explosions and you can't find a building that could contain that kind of shit I've got a lot of points I'm not using.
levelshift: (shampoo in his eyes)

[personal profile] levelshift 2025-01-08 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I guess. But unless you've already got high-end tastes, the basic apartment building that's offered for everyone is just fine.

Oh. If they don't give a shit about safety, keep them away from that place. There's a namesake to my ability there, and if someone who doesn't have a background in particle physics fucks around with it they could destroy everything within the barrier.

[Please keep explosions away from the particle accelerator, thank you.]

I don't think so. I've been around the place a few times, it seems like it's deserted.
