[ Today is a... complicated one for Ardyn, to say the least. No one but him knows why though and he'll likely keep it that way.

He has, however, gotten extremely drunk about it and that lends itself to him asking a query on the Etrayan network: ]


What does fate mean to you?

[ He appreciates now more than ever the auto-correct feature. He should probably invest in some reading glasses eventually, but that'll be a problem for Ardyn-with-a-headache-from-squinting-in-the-dark-at-a-small-screen and not the Ardyn of now. ]

Ah, so you believe in the multiple branching paths. The root and trunk of the tree is maybe the same, but our choices dictate which branch we ultimately end up following. Is that right?

Sort of, I suppose. I'm more going for the notion that there are so many choices and so many paths, there's no meaningful difference between "choosing to follow a path" and "doing whatever you want".

Mm. I'd feel more accurate in subscribing to that entirely if I hadn't spent years chasing one guy futilely. Not how I would have chosen to spend my life.

An existential threat to our world and a personal enemy. I don't dare let him alone, nor do I want to.

Oh, how fun. Bound together by opposite turns of fate is one of my favorites.

And that's the second example of 'fate': making a choice being described as not making one. Is it fate if it's our choices that put us at odds?

Well, therein lies one the problems: the layers. The nuance!

Would you have made different choices in different circumstances? Ones that might have led you to agreeing, rather than being enemies?

Who can say? That isn't a you that exists, but it could have been. Maybe some force, like 'fate,' led you to be exactly where you are and make the choices you did. Or maybe it was all just circumstantial and the chips fell where they may. I find it hard to believe 'fate' could account for every possibility there ever would be and choose one path specifically for a person, but the avatar of it on my world claims that to be the case.

If that were true, everything would be completely pointless. So I assume it isn't. That's as simple as I can see it.
