un: Panacea | video (shortly before the event)

TW for: body horror, regrown limbs

[A video comes alive to Amy Dallon, a frumpy looking girl with a mess of frizzy hair and pronounced tattoos standing back as she checks that it's all working. Peeking out behind her is a short young girl with a short wavy bob of blonde hair and a expression clearly meant to put a facade of professionalism over her bubbling excitement.

Amy adjusts it one more so that both her and Riley are fully in frame and then, stepping back, she clears her throat.]

So, um. With the mission happening in the next few days and uh, a lot of injuries being sustained in the last mission with the whole... curfew breaking... thing. [That SHE wasn't invited to, despite how crucial her powers could have been!! But whatever.] I've noticed that there's like - god, speak clearly. I've noticed that there's a lot of injuries that people have sustained either here or in their original world that seem to have gone unaddressed. So, I think I -

[The shorter and younger girl pipes up.]

We!

[Amy rolls her eyes, not entirely unfondly.]

We haven't been advertising our powers and their utility enough. If you've been injured or are suffering with something more, uh, longterm - then we can help. I have the ability to shape biological matter over a short process, so I can accelerate healing over scars, severed limbs, regrow organs, mend broken bones - that kind of thing. And Riley...

[She pipes up with a shrug.]

Pretty much the same thing, but I can't do it with just a touch. I need to actually cut you guys up and open, so I'm basically her sous-chef.

[Amy nods. Riley looks up at her, sticks out her arm, a small eager smile on her face. Amy looks down, grunts in what is probably supposed to come across as disapproval or reluctance but it's not very convincing.]

As an... example, of what we can do, we've prepared a perfectly safe demonstration. Um. Riley, go ahead.

[Riley grabs hold of her right arm with her left, and detaches the joints cleanly, taking what appears to be an entirely normal arm entirely off of her shoulder. It's clearly not a prosthetic by the way that it continues to twitch as the nerves react to no longer being connected to her body and brain, and like, the blood. Less blood than there probably should be but there's still definitely blood.]

And for our next trick... [She looks up at Amy with a grin as Amy places a hand on Riley's shoulder.

Slowly, skin and flesh begin to tie together, bone grows and restores. It's a process that takes about half a minute and it's visible for every disturbing moment as an arm is reshaped from blood, mucus and raw biological material into a fully functioning human limb. The arm is paler than the rest of Riley's body, the hand takes a bit longer to form, sprouting one miniscule bone at a time as Amy Dallon or Panacea recreates them out of practically nothing. Fingers proud on the palm of the hand one at a time, and at first one is shorter than it should be before with a light cracking sound, Amy starts to adjust it and sets it into place. There is no sign of anything other than a huge enthralled smile on Riley's face as she watches the arm form into place, and the concentration and focus on Amy's face doesn't stray into disgust or discomfort. On the contrary, this is the most at peace she's been since she got here.

The arm forms. Fully functioning and Amy steps back. Riley wiggles her fingers on her new arm before using both arms to break into jazz hands.]
Ta-dah! Arms from torsos; way cooler than rabbits from hats.

[Amy barely suppresses the small smile that threatens to creep onto her face.] Um, so yeah. That's an example of what we can do, though it's not always that visible, that was an example so you'd know we're not like, exaggerating. Anyway either reach out or come visit my room in the apartments and we'll see what we can do for you. I'd encourage anyone to do a checkup since, it's kind of necessary in case there's any underlying issues.

[Amy gives an awkward smile, an awkward wave and then the expression drops.]

Uh, stop recording? Riley, I think the arm might be a little too offputti-

[And the video cuts off.]

Thank you very much for the sudden rush of displeasing memories with your very visceral demonstrations. I appreciate your clear concern for the impact your desire to brag has on others.

1.) So you didn't plan your communications? That is certainly a way to present yourselves as thoughtful medical personnel capable of complex decision making.

2.) Replace 'to brag' with 'to assuage your insecurities', then. The statement stands.

3.) If you want to offer your services as a healer, you need to demonstrate some sense of awareness of the experiences of others. You are doing the opposite of that. People need to be able to have some trust in their healers - so far you're just demonstrating you'll use their experiences for shock value in order to feel good about yourself.

So you didn't do this deliberately? Even though you're clearly addressing the public? This message differs a great deal from the previous clearly unintended moving picture delivered to us.

[Linhardt very much doubts that they didn't mean to show everyone this message, but there is the slight possibility he is wrong.]

You also are making assumptions. I need no lectures on the role of a healer and to be quite honest, no, I don't care about how people feel after they leave my care - much like I don't care how you feel about my opinion. I do care if they continue to cause problems by becoming mentally unstable or if they have such an unpleasant experience in the infirmary that they refuse treatment and spread diseases or end up being a drain on our resources. Your 'help' is creating more work for the other healers in the long term and assuming that they'll pick up the slack for the parts of healing you don't want to engage with - without asking us or securing agreement.

There is at least one person here who has missing body parts and several who are liable to associate sights like the one you just shared with events of extreme violence. Reminding people of those events randomly, without warning, in a time and place where they should be somewhat safe doesn't help their mental stability, and we have at least one person here who is struggling with keeping himself mentally whole. You could at least not have such severe myopia that it limits you to only considering medical issues you can cure.

[Mercedes clearly isn't helping Dimitri. Linhardt is far from friends with the man, but his own self-interest dictates that preventing the man from going insane would be beneficial.]

Furthermore, on a strategic level, I am disinclined to trust anyone who says they want to assist and then declares they don't care about the experiences of others. What is to stop you from dumping someone outside with half a leg because they asked you the wrong question?

Do you want to assist people or do you want to feel useful to keep the existential dread of your helplessness regarding the situation here at bay?

Understandable angre - she's right he's a sanctimonious prick...

[personal profile] sleepfan 2024-09-17 06:01 pm (UTC)(link)
[ For some reason, Linhardt is replying immediately, typing his response as he reads the incoming tirade. He has his answer partly composed - yes, they can do charades if that's her only way of actually communicating since she clearly doesn't understand that he's asking why they recorded the practice run at all if the technology is so unstable - but something he reads stops him in his tracks because it has to be wrong. Or hyperbole. Surely, it's hyperbole. The man looks down at the text he's composing, suddenly seeing it for the first time and then holding his thumb over the erasing button (which is so much more convenient than smudging away graphite) - forgoing continued hostilities in lieu of addressing something more important.]

How old are you?

Given our previous interactions, I should clarify I'm not asking to insult you or impugn your abilities. Something you said has to be hyperbole and I am doing the math to prove it to myself. Your age is a relevant variable. I am hoping you are much older than I think you are.

I'm glad you won't do this again.

[ That's all he actually cares about. Whether or not the two women hate him isn't relevant or important, and he doesn't need an apology. ]
sleepfan: (Thinking)

[personal profile] sleepfan 2024-09-18 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)

To what degree of magnitude was your earlier mention hyperbole?

[It has to be hyperbole. Otherwise, they need to have a very different conversation.]

My feelings are approximately 5% pity, 5% judgement of you, 70% judgement of the people around you, and 20% an unspecified negative emotion that I haven't properly interpreted yet and am unlikely to as it causes me great discomfort.

I understand that your abilities are unique. That is why working you until you throw yourself off a high tower with no backup plan is moronic. Not to mention that if your abilities are unique then nobody will be able to tell if you're making mistakes, which becomes exponentially more likely the longer you're denied proper rest.

It sounds to me as though the people in charge of governing your world don't want to do their jobs and would rather rely on your guilt until you drown yourself in a river. They're idiots. If there are millions of people, then even if it takes a thousand people to replicate the scale of your work, it's still perfectly doable. If the ability itself is too rare, then people need to specialize in other forms of care and medicine, even if they are slower. We can heal broken bones immediately, but if we need to prioritize other matters, it is best for those with broken bones to have them set and wait for them to heal.

Setting aside those who are governing (as in my experience there are many people who want the power of governing with none of the responsibility), I am also heavily judging your family and friends if you have them. If you are alone, I am judging how the people around you prefer to exploit that vulnerability. They are not good people.
sleepfan: (Attentive)

[personal profile] sleepfan 2024-09-21 06:50 pm (UTC)(link)
You're correct, I do not. Which is why I specified 'if you have them.' I understand it is an emotional topic and I won't bring them up again.

[ Clearly, if the woman had no family, it is not her family's fault that her wellbeing had not been looked after. The only reason Linhardt doesn't stop speaking altogether is because of the nature of the threat she makes - the curious areas of his mind are alight with questions and the slight chance of being turned into a monster has never stopped him from indulging his curiosity before. He doesn't see why it should now.]

Can you do that? Is that an extension of your displayed powers - that is, would you use my natural self and warp it beyond all recognition - or is it an entirely different ability? Does the monster created depend on the initial creature used as a base?
sleepfan: (Straight Forward)

[personal profile] sleepfan 2024-09-24 02:02 pm (UTC)(link)
That depends on who you ask.

If you expected a shocked and horrified response, I will supply the context that I have seen people changed into monsters against their will, and it is a potential side effect of my own research. Therefore it is not a new or unusual threat. However, information about preventing such things is either non existent or hidden from us, so I asked you questions in hopes of understanding as I would like to prevent such transformations in the future.

Would you prefer me to scream into this device? That seems like it would be unpleasant. Or were you hoping for fear? I normally can control my fear response until I'm actively in danger of dying in the next five minutes.
sleepfan: (Hands up talking)

[personal profile] sleepfan 2024-09-24 04:19 pm (UTC)(link)
A minor point of correction: I balked at waking out of a peaceful slumber to be confronted with someone having their arm ripped off. It reminded me of seeing limbs removed on the battlefield and needing to choose who to help and who would die calling for their mother. I did not mind the demonstration of your abilities - I'm aware of how healing knits together the inner workings of the body and while I still have little fondness for seeing humans looking like slaughtered animals, I have learned to temper that distaste.

I am very strange. Thank you for noticing - I do dislike when people consider me 'normal'.

That is understandable. I do not think I would mind being a monster, but most people would and eventually would go quite insane.

Would you need to know what their human body was like or would you be able to feel out the process of changing them back?

[personal profile] mutually_doomed 2024-09-15 09:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I've seen my fair share of what medicine heals. No judgement here.

[She did just do a video with a child who... ripped off their own arm? That, honestly, was far more disturbing. The glee in which the younger person participated was interesting, to say the least. Claude gets the distinct feeling this person has not had very good responses to this demonstration.]

Sort of. I've met someone who is basically the a cloud in human shape who told me a bit about it. Where I'm from we would just call it magic or a Crest ability. Were you born being able to do that?

mutually_doomed: (confident explain)

[personal profile] mutually_doomed 2024-09-17 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
[It takes a lot to make Claude squeemish. Seeing humans turn into giant armored flesh-eating monsters on the regular will do that to a guy.]

Huh. That's fascinating. Is it common in your world for people to inherit powers from their predecessors?

[Were there other worlds that were similar to theirs when it came to what their bodies could learn through their blood?]
mutually_doomed: (confident explain)

[personal profile] mutually_doomed 2024-09-21 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
Are the shards physical things or are they something that is passed down in the blood or some other way?

We have something similar where I come from, actually. They're called Crests. They're also passed down through lineage, but it isn't a surefire thing for a child to inherit the power of a Crest in their family line.
mutually_doomed: (Default)

[personal profile] mutually_doomed 2024-09-21 06:27 pm (UTC)(link)
[The fact that this person could talk about brain parasite so casually was astounding.]

So a creature that lives in the brains of your parents was able to influence how you developed in the womb? Do you have a brain parasite, too? Do both parents need to have the parasite for it to be given to the children?

Yeah, it's inherited. The Crests are thought to be in our blood and are thought to be gifts inherited from ancient warriors that were blessed by the Goddess. There is a lot of religion from where I come from that, if you ask me, obscures a lot of what probably really happened. [It's freeing to be able to say that out loud and not have to worry about being tried by the church as a heretic.]

There is still a lot we don't know about Crests. Some people back home have dedicated their lives to learning about them and understanding how they work. I've read some works, but I am no expert. Someone from my world who knows more about them is here though. I can introduce you if you want.

And honestly? I don't know that there is too big of a difference. If what you were talking about happened in my home, we would call it magic.

Sure, maybe back in a normal world. [ Fabian, your world is absolutely anything but normal, my dude. Just for the record. ]

But so many strange things happen all the time here. Would those people really start to draw the line at this? If so, they still have a lot of surprises waiting for them here. I thought that entire thing with the stuffed animals was much stranger than growing limbs.

[ Though maybe less gross.
