There are board games and board games. The ones I was talking about aren't so much about strategy as they are about psychological warfare. Not the fun kind of psychological warfare, either. The boring type.

But you're right. I'll concede that. Some games played on boards are better than others.

There's a boring type? I wasn't aware.

But I'm glad you can see they aren't as mind-numbing as you initially stated.

[He's not aware of... the more childish games of nowadays. Someone needs to introduce him to Monopoly and watch him rage.]

Count yourself lucky, and if anyone tries to rope you into a game of Monopoly, know that person wishes you ill.

I play Go and chess. I think they're in the same line as the games you were talking about. If we ever end up with an afternoon to kill, maybe we could organize a board game night that doesn't suck.

I'll keep that in mind. Can't say I've heard of Monopoly.

And I'd be all for that. I haven't gotten to play Go but I'm rather good at chess.

I also have my deck of a game called
Duel Monsters with me if anyone likes card games.
equivo: (how'd you know that's just what i like?)

[personal profile] equivo 2024-04-28 04:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Not one of humanity's finest achievements. Trust me. You don't want to know.

I'm guessing from the name that Duel Monsters is a card battle game?
thetombkeeper: (011)

[personal profile] thetombkeeper 2024-04-28 05:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Is it really that bad?

Indeed it is! I was just in a tournament for it before I was pulled here.
equivo: (i've been pissing off all the neighbours)

[personal profile] equivo 2024-04-28 07:33 pm (UTC)(link)
It tears friendships apart and ruins family vacations. Especially if you're good at it.

Amateur or professional?

[personal profile] thetombkeeper 2024-04-28 07:37 pm (UTC)(link)
All from a board game? Do people take it that seriously?

Professional.

[He'll, uh, refrain from saying how it went.]
equivo: (how'd you know that's just what i like?)

[personal profile] equivo 2024-04-28 07:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Not initially. It's only after you get into it that it starts getting frustrating.

Interesting. I've been in professional brackets before. Video games, not card games. I wouldn't have guessed there'd be more people with that experience.
thetombkeeper: (007)

[personal profile] thetombkeeper 2024-04-28 07:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Ahh. So it brings out people's competitive side.

Well, it's nice to meet another professional gamer! Maybe you can show me the ropes of video games. I only saw them in passing when I was in Japan.

Essentially.

And sure, why not? Cross cultural exchange. I'm pretty sure some of the people here haven't even heard of them before, so you've got a head start.

[personal profile] thetombkeeper 2024-04-28 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
That makes me more curious about it now.

Color me surprised that I'll have a head start in that regard.

The name's Marik, by the way.

[personal profile] equivo 2024-04-28 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
In hindsight, I've made it sound too interesting. It's game about real estate.

Krouse. And I don't think we can assume universals about people's experiences anymore, which is only mildly a pain in the ass.

A business game? I'm still intrigued.

That's true. It's weird hearing how many worlds don't have the same things or events happening in them.
equivo: (mama raised me right)

[personal profile] equivo 2024-04-29 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
Fake business, involving top hats and dogs vying for control of boardwalk properties.

It is. But you'll adjust. If you've ever heard of alt-history, it's the same principle.
thetombkeeper: (094)

[personal profile] thetombkeeper 2024-04-29 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, that sounds a bit ridiculous. Maybe not as intrigued as before.

I'm vaguely familiar with the concept. I'll keep that in mind.

You can also go to jail. Not a good time.

As long as you don't insist your world is the 'real' one, it's probably interesting to compare notes. You might be surprised what people will think is novel.
thetombkeeper: (081)

[personal profile] thetombkeeper 2024-04-30 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Wait. Really?

Right. I don't think mine is the "real" one. It's just the one I'm from.
equivo: (pic#17106072)

[personal profile] equivo 2024-05-01 03:32 am (UTC)(link)
You have to pay to get out, roll doubles, or use a card. One point for realism there, I guess.

Good attitude. We already have to be biased by default. Probably shouldn't make it worse by being picky.
thetombkeeper: (147)

[personal profile] thetombkeeper 2024-05-01 03:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh. I thought you meant actual jail. I was wondering what kind of game it was that had you go to a real jail.

Have people had that opposing mindset here?
equivo: (pic#17106071)

[personal profile] equivo 2024-05-01 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd have led with actual jail if that was a problem with a board game.

Not so much that. More assuming the rules of where they came from should be the rules everywhere. Not much flexibility in accommodation.
thetombkeeper: (076)

[personal profile] thetombkeeper 2024-05-02 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, you're right. That was stupid of me to assume.

I can understand that. Although I figured from the technology and Aurora's explanation that things would be different here.
equivo: (pic#17106069)

[personal profile] equivo 2024-05-02 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
Not necessarily. Maybe board game jail is normal where I'm from. It's not, but you can't rule that out being true somewhere.

There's different and there's different. It's not the big things, like powers vs no powers. It's more the ways people think. Different moral values, and so on.
thetombkeeper: (053)

[personal profile] thetombkeeper 2024-05-02 04:30 am (UTC)(link)
I haven't played many modern games either so it could be that.

Yes, the whole "your having to defend your world" thing shows that particular difference quite well. Especially with us not knowing what the powers that be consider good and bad.
equivo: (never had an issue)

[personal profile] equivo 2024-05-03 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
Weird question: are you not from modern times?

Yeah. I'd love a look at the rules of this game. Then again, figuring them out might be part of the test.
