The multiverse all the total possible states that could have unfolded from the origin point of the universe. Universes that are more similar to each other, with fewer and more recent points of divergence, are apparently easier to reach.
Where I come from, we've got one neighbouring universe we can talk to, so all of this is pretty much based on that. On one side of the portal between them, plenty of superheroes, plenty of problems. On the other, not so much. Some people have counterparts, most people born after the divergence point don't. It makes watching movies from the other universe interesting.
I guess my tip is try not to be too freaked out by that. But I grew up with it, so I don't really know what it's like for the rest of you.
