Uh... sorry? [Chagrin tone.] I was curious about an idea, since I still consider myself fairly new to this situation. Here's hoping you all with entertain me here:

What does a sense of community mean or feel like to you?

[A beat of a pause.]

Is it friends and family? Is it gathering places and camaraderie? How about a sense of people uniting for a specific purpose in mind? Everyone here has their own agendas and their own interests, and, with no overt crime present at the moment, it's curious to me how we could build a sense of community around these parts.

Community is where people gather. Perhaps not with the same exact goal, but loosely the same philosophy will do. Ideally with everyone helping one another. The people needn’t be blood relatives… or even friends precisely.

But relating to one another enough to put the little things aside and build something bigger than the individuals. That’s community to me.

You and I align for the most part. Community is bringing people of all walks of life together to feel safe, thrive and learn about one another. Where I'm from, most people aren't blood related, but we're all people trying to live our lives.

I like the idea of people protecting each other and being able to accomplish goals that improve lives. That doesn't mean there isn't rules or punishment for breaking them, but people should be able to learn from their correction and reintegrate back in to the community.

Do they all know? I haven't made the rounds to everyone socially yet, but it's on my list.

However, you and I both know community needs to exist for progress to be made. Maybe we can even create something better while we labour in this place.

A community is... like a spiderweb. Everyone has strands of bonds connecting them to others, a few people or many, positive or negative. And those people have bonds extending out from them, and on and on.

And when something happens in a place like this, and a strand somewhere gets plucked? Everyone feels it, to some degree.

Hmmm, that's a fascinating analogy. I hadn't thought about it like that before, but I have to say that I agree in part. Community does have a certain interconnectedness.

in my world, every four years there's an event called the olympics, in which athletes from around the world come together in a little popup "olympic village" for rest and recreation between competitions

it's a similar situation with us
even knowing that it's unlikely all of our worlds will be chosen for salvation, we all come together between missions to relax and drink and sometimes even have parties!

It's a community in that is has people who co-exist with each other and occasionally meet up. However, from my experience, a community does require more effort than just laying down a building or business.

And I don't entirely agree with that. We should be supporting each other more directly instead of sitting on our hands waiting for the next mission. Who knows, maybe I'm saying this because I don't have a job currently. I suppose I'm less inclined to play the waiting game.

For me, a sense of community is like being in a herd. And in a herd, you look out for one another, regardless of whether they’re family, friends, or simply acquaintances working towards the same goal.

How would you feel about a herd in this place someday?

I think... Etraya is actually probably the closest to actual community I've felt in a while for myself, which- Yeah! That's been kind of crazy for me, really, considering how we're all from different worlds and stuff.

Uhm, but- What makes it feel like that is kind of the fact we are all different, but here for a common cause and - for the most part, I think - working towards it. No one wants their worlds to die or anything, so we're helping each other out to make sure our homes are safe. Some people might have different ideas of what that means, exactly, but they're still trying. I want to believe they are, anyway.

And, like. Family is what you make it, right? I don't know that I'd call some people here that just yet but pretty close, which! I already didn't have a good relationship with my actual family back home, so, maybe I'm just a bit biased there of sometimes people you befriend can be better than blood ties.

I didn't mean to ramble or anything though! I guess I had more thoughts on it all than I realized.

Thanks for voicing your thoughts on your impression of most of us working for the same goal and willing to help each other out to accomplish that. I suppose that competing agendas on how we accomplish that is the biggest sticking point that I've observed.

And you're right. Where I'm from, family is what you make of it rather than the blood ties. Blood can be important but everyone can be family. None of the people I consider closest to me are blood related.

So... what, you're interested in trying to get us all on the same page? All things considered, we should already be considered a community. We've all been kidnapped by the same forces, and there's not even enough of us to fill the city. Us actually being a, like, functional community would take a lot more work. We'd have to agree on what we want, and what we wanna work for.

You would think that, but considering how much tit-for-tat and complaints about each other on the network, it doesn't seem as if this place had formed up into any sort of community united on any particular purpose. It may not be possible with the circumstances of our detainment and some of the louder personalities here.

Time will tell how it works out. We have time, I assume. Maybe some like-minded folks can make that effort if there's a hunger for it.

It's not a full on surprise, given the impression Fabian got from him last time around, but he still didn't fully see this question coming either. ]

I think what doesn't help is that this place often puts us up against each other. [ He can answer the community question too, sure, but-- he feels like with what Vander says at the end there, the other is much more thinking about that. And maybe pointing out the problems might get them there in a reverse sort of way. ]

It does seem to want to do that, yeah. I assume that is on purpose to see how we manage time, other people, and situations. After all, no doubt they will push the narrative that not all worlds can or will be saved.
