Assuming the Fae of Auriel share the same aversion to iron as those of the Feywild from where I am from, I am offering to craft temporary weapons and tools from non-iron materials for anyone preparing for the mission. My trade lies in metalwork, with modest skill in wood and leather. Brass, bronze, bone, horn, or seasoned wood are all suitable.

Time before departure is limited, so I can only take a few commissions.

Separately, I am pursuing a personal project involving spell storage and glyphcraft. If anyone has experience in such work, I would appreciate a private exchange of ideas.

That is excellent material. Deer bone is lighter than I prefer, but it keeps its integrity if cured properly. If you are willing to part with a few pieces, I can put them to use. The jawbone axes sound promising. Ingenious shape, really. I would enjoy seeing how you make the teeth work for you rather than against.

Stygian iron, you said? I cannot claim familiarity with that alloy, but if it behaves anything like true iron, your caution is wise. A dagger will serve you better. I will keep you at the bottom of the list as requested. Do you have a material you would prefer, or is bone acceptable?

That is the goal, yes. With luck, these weapons will never leave their sheaths. But luck is fickle, and preparation offends no one. I would rather we carry the means to defend ourselves and never use them than need them and have nothing at hand.

A gun is out of the question. Firearms demand components we will not have time to produce. A dagger is simple enough, though I could hammer out a few short swords if form follows function rather than fashion. They will not gleam, but they will hold an edge and a balance worth trusting.

Bring what material you can spare, and I will see you placed on the list. You will have a weapon in hand before we leave.

We're intended to blend in with them, and presumably cooperate with, so we aren't flagged as outsiders. Enlighten me how bringing additional weapons is going to lend to that cause.

We intend to blend and cooperate, but it would be foolish to go unarmed. The weapons will be non-iron and practical, most shaped to pass as tools. A dagger cuts rope as easily as it defends a throat, and short swords are common enough not to draw attention. I can’t promise no one will flaunt them, but that isn’t the goal. Non-iron arms will fit in a Fae city and give us a measure of defence if things turn sour.

I did not plan on opening a shop. Forging has always been a means to an end, not a business model. Still, if there’s enough demand and I can secure proper supplies and equipment, it’s worth considering. I’d have to speak with Vex first; she’s the one who understands the arithmetic of success.

I've no need of a weapon, but may I inquire as to what you mean by "spell storage"?

That depends on what sort of magic you mean. Spell storage, in theory, is the act of embedding a spell into an object so it can be released later. A gemstone or a forged channel can hold the energy, provided the structure is sound and the caster knows what they are doing.

I do not have the magic to charge them myself, but I can make the casings and the conduits strong enough to hold the binding without it leaking or collapsing. Think of it as building the bottle for someone else’s lightning.

Of course. A blade does not have to draw blood to be worth the making. The same skills go into kitchen knives, carving tools, and finer instruments. What did you have in mind, Clea? Or should I be worried that your definition of not weaponry is more creative than mine?

It seems word travels quickly. I have already been approached about commissions that have nothing to do with weaponry, which is a pleasant surprise.

The glyphwork is where most of my attention is going. I want to craft specialized arrows for my wife, Vex’ahlia, pieces that serve a purpose beyond simple impact. Something that can shift the field in our favor, lend strength, create distraction, or offer a moment of cover. Someone suggested enchanting crystals as a power source, and it is a clever idea. I can forge the arrows and carve the channels, but I will need someone with the proper magic to bind them.

There is a certain romance in watching her show off when the work performs as intended.

A request held in reserve. Now that is interesting. And considerate. Whatever you have in mind, it can certainly wait. Missions are not the place for side commissions, especially the sort introduced with that tone.

When we return, please address me properly and share your thoughts with me. I do not need the details now, and I will not pry. Some ideas settle better when given time to develop.

I will have the forge ready afterwards, provided the world has not collapsed beneath our feet. Bring me the concept, the purpose, or even just the feeling you want the thing to carry. So long as it can be made without iron, I can shape it.

Until then, keep your mystery intact. It will give me something to look forward to that is not an impending catastrophe.

Spell storage. Yes. Imagine carving a channel or building a vessel that can hold a spell the same way a bottle can hold wine. The magic sits dormant until the moment you uncork it, then it releases exactly as intended. That is the theory, at least.

I am unable to charge the vessels myself. I lack the necessary arcane spark. But I can craft the casings, the grooves, the layered conduits that give the spell somewhere stable to rest. Runes behave like architecture. If you build the structure soundly enough, someone else’s magic can take shelter inside it without tearing the place apart.

Think of it as preparing a home for a spell, then handing the key to someone far more gifted than I am.

Regretfully I do not know what kind of metal my weapon is made of, but it doesn't really matter because it is currently at the bottom of a river.

So I need a polearm, if you have time. Ideally double-ended, but a single will do. In exchange, I can help a little with the glyphs, if you know what pictos are, or material gathering, or whatever you need. I'm versatile!

Pictos. Now that is a word I have not heard before. If it ties into runework or anything even vaguely symbolic, then it might actually help with my glyph project. You will have to show me how they’re structured, though, or I’ll end up drawing them upside-down and summoning something unpleasant. I’d prefer to avoid that sort of day.

As for your polearm, I can make one. A double-ended version is doable, but it takes twice the balance and three times the patience. I’ll aim for it, but if the mission chews up our time, I may have to start with a single-headed one so you aren’t left fighting with a very dramatic broom handle. We can upgrade when life settles down.

And your offer to help does not go unnoticed. “Versatile” usually means either extremely helpful or extremely chaotic, and I’m prepared for both outcomes. Bring me any sturdy, iron-free material you can find and tell me how long you want the reach. That is all I need to start.

We’ll sort the rest out, and you can introduce me to these mysterious pictos while we work. You get to feel clever, and I get to pretend I’m keeping up.
